Searle’s “Can Computers Think?”
We’ve been studying various theories of the relation between the mind and the body. Searle is raising an issue that is interesting in it’s own right: Can computers think? But his argument also has implications for theories on the mind-body relation. If Searle’s argument succeeds, what theories of the mind-body relation would be supported or undermined?
Besides focusing on which theories Searle’s argument
strengthens or weakens, try to get as clear as possible on how the argument works. Try
to state the gist of argument with just a few sentences.
